Moving to a Mac: Working with Finder… Apple’s My Computer

Following the popularity of my first article on moving to a mac, I have decided to continue the series by introducing Finder to Windows users and talking about some of the pluses and minuses of what is generally a very good piece of file management software. For those users who are interested in moving to the mac from a Windows-based system, I would definitely recommend reading this quick article… Continue reading

Pages vs. Word: Word Processing on the Mac

I recently moved to the Mac platform having used Windows-based machines and Office for well over 5 years. Being a student (in both computer science, politics and French) as well as working part-time for a company that manages buildings, I often make use of a word processor to put together essays, specification documents, manuals and briefs. As a result, being able to use a powerful, yet simple word… Continue reading

Life in France… c’est la vie!

Well it is official. I have now been in France for 3 and a half months. Wow.

Now is probably a good time more than ever to réfléchir à my experiences, living life in a different country for a long period of time, my first time truly away from family for a long period and studying in a country with an entirely different language.

Studying in… Continue reading

Badware Removal Tools

Having dealt with a lot of badware in time and having been frustrated by the lack of a good resource for finding badware removal tools quickly and easily, I decided to try and start putting together a list of good badware removal tools available on the Internet.

You can now find on my website under Networking and Security, a thorough list of good badware removal tools which I have… Continue reading

Moving to a Mac

Well it has been just under six months now since I got myself my first MacBook from the UNSW Apple store in Sydney, Australia. And the verdict is...

WOW!

Prior to the purchase of this Mac, I had only previously used Macs on two occasions: during a work experience week in Year 10 at school at MCSU UNSW with a long-time Mac user and before that in Year 4 in… Continue reading

Backing up a mysql server

In an increasingly data dependant world, backing up has never been more important. This especially applies to databases on servers. It is shocking to know how many people fail to backup their data out of sheer ignorance or a failure to understand the purpose of backing up until its too late (I used to be one of those people, but then I was young and didn't have much… Continue reading

Cryus Mail server back-up script

During my early days mucking around with linux in attempt to find the best pieces of software for a range of different tasks, I stumbled upon cyrus mail server, the Carnegie Mellon Unversity's implementation of an IMAP server.

Having already tested the Washington University implementation of IMAP as well as Dovecot, I was still unconvinced by the IMAP protocol, particularly its implementation on… Continue reading

A bug in WordPress 2.5 Write Post?

Having setup my website in WordPress 2.5 and added a collection of plugins to the mix, I discovered to my dismay that on writing a new blog post, the categories choice section, located just under the WYSIWYG post box was completely fuzzled up.

Essentially what was happening was the choices for "All Categories" and "Most Used" where getting muddled up with the tickboxes and category names, rendering the display virutally useless. … Continue reading

WordPress as a CMS

I must admit straight off the bat - I am not one to cling wholeheartedly to the concept of blogging. I'm not quite sure exactly why. I have tried it about four times with little or no success and surprise, surprise; here I am again.

However, this time I am using WordPress for an entirely different reason: as a Content Management System.

WordPress has come a long long way since its early… Continue reading
